The Iranian Plateau with its mountainous landscape and peaks up to 5000 m has always been a natural obstacle to easy ways of communication. Nevertheless from ancient times up to the present important trading routes have been finding their way through the region: among them the famous Silk Road.

In the past 90 years Iran has built more than 5000 km of railroad over this difficult territory connecting remote regions to the great cities and providing access to the country’s main ports. Numerous bold bridges and tunnels have been constructed to surmount the natural obstacles.

The country’s railway links to most of its neighbouring countries and will soon close the remaining gap between European and Indian subcontinent rail network. With the opening of the Silk Road railway to Turkmenistan, merchandises from Central Asia find a convenient way to the sea crossing Iran by rail.

Railway is by far the safest way to reach remote places of Iran. Whether a tourist or a businessman you will enjoy the marvellous landscape with its deserts in the central and southern regions or the high mountain range of the Alborz up to the southern coastline of the Caspian with its fertile plains.

Main stations provide all necessary services for your trip in the ambience of great architecture. Air conditioned and comfortable passenger carriages with spacious compartments will guarantee for a pleasant and comfortable journey. In the first class a waiter for each carriage is at your service to bring you tea, water, meals and snacks.

Save time and take an overnight train to reach your destination right in the morning. A computerised reservation system with many agencies across the country allows you to book seats and sleepers up to one month prior to your travelling time.

Railway is an excellent means of transport to reduce environment pollution and avoid traffic congestion, a safe and economic way to reach your destination. Catch the train to discover Iran and meet its friendly people!
